Long time collaborators Bob James and Nathan East have created a true jazz masterpiece with their latest effort “The New Cool”. Yamaha Entertainment Group label president Chris Gero equipped a state-of-the-art Nashville studio with Yamaha gear and gave the two free reign to create. The result is an unexpected classic jazz album showcasing the amazing talents of these two Grammy recognized artists.
Throughout the The New Cool, East’s silky meandering bass lines interplay perfectly with James’ pastoral piano wanderings. From sparsely arranged duets to complex orchestrations, The New Cool truly explores the outer limits of strait-ahead jazz.
Meet Timothy J Wilson; Singer, Songwriter, Producer, Multi-Instrumentalist. Hailing from White Plains, NY, Wilson is currently based in Atlanta, GA where he has quickly made a name for himself.
On his latest release, “Lovesongwriter”, Wilson lays down some serious bass grooves, ranging from silky smooth to full-out funk. A true musician, his talents don’t end with just the bass. Wilson plays all of the instrument on the “Lovesongwriter” EP and his powerful vocals bring each track to life.
Tonic: The Music Improvisation Card Game is finishing up it’s Kickstarter campaign this week, having more than doubled its original pledge goal.
Created for all musicians, playing any style, on any instrument. Tonic is a new card based game, developed as a new way for musicians to learn & practice improvisation in a way that emphasizes freedom and fun. For most of us the idea of improv can be intimidating, and the goal of Tonic is to break through that barrier and make it more accessible. The game can be played either alone or with a group and requires no experience or knowledge of music theory.
Lately I’ve been feeling like I have hit a plateau in my learning. You know the place, you keep practicing but don’t seem to make any progress. This is a frustrating place to be, to say the least. I’ve been here many time and have learned to recognize it as such, but still, I have been struggling with finding the motivation to sit down and practice.

Darren Michaels newest release “Seasons”, presents the solo bassists as a singer/songwriter. Approaching the album with the idea of capturing the magical timbre of vocals and acoustic guitar but with bass, Michaels has created a highly personal, somewhat unconventional, set of solo bass tracks.
Before I get into my review of Lesson 14 of Teach Me Bass Guitar I would like to talk a little about my journey so far. Looking back I am realizing that it has been more than 5 years since I started My Journey with Teach Me Bass Guitar. In that time I have had numerous ups and down in my life, but have continued to work through the course at my own pace. Upon completing Lesson 13 and returning from Roy Vogt’s Bass Boot Camp in 2013 I decided that I rushed through too many of the lessons and that I would start the course over. Working through the course a second time I feel I had a greater understanding of the concepts presented and thus got lot more out of it than I did the first time. This journey has taken me longer than I ever anticipated, but I wouldn’t have it any other way. I have learned so much about music and playing bass, and met so many incredible people along my path, I wouldn’t have it any other way. Today I am proud to say that I have worked my way back through to Lesson 13 and am close to completing Lesson 14. To some it may seem long over due, but to me it seems just about right.
On May 5th I was fortunate enough to join an eclectic crowd in San Francisco at the Independent featuring Esperanza Spalding Presents: Emily’s D+Evolution. The show was an amazing mix of performance art and music, melding Jazz, R&B, Funk and Rock layered on top with performance pieces by Esperanza and her band.
