Bitten By The Bass Effects Bug

MXR Bass ChorusI have always been pretty much a cord straight into the amp kind of guy, not going in much for bass effect pedals.  Years ago I had a Flanger that I used on 1 song, and I’ve experimented on and off with multi-effects units from Behringer, Line 6 and Zoom, but find these to be more trouble than they are worth.  Recently, however, I seemed to have been bitten by the bass effects bug.  Fueled initially while experimenting with Piccolo strings and a Octaver on my Zoom B1x multi-effects pedal, I have come to realize that today there are a ton of bass specific effects on the market.

Lately I find myself trolling YouTube and Juan Alderete’s site, PedalsandEffects.com, looking for cool effect demos.  While I don’t think I’ll go all out and build a huge pedal board, I am thinking to pick up a few different effects and give them a whirl.  In fact, I picked up my first one today, an MXR Bass Chorus Deluxe.

A full on review will come in a later post, but for now I have to say that I am completely enamored with it.  It has several knobs to tweak the Chorus effect, plus a button which turns it into a Flanger.  So basically it is two effects in one!  I’ll definitely be spending some time with it this next week.

Looking ahead I plan to get a Compressor and maybe a Octaver.  I haven’t decided yet if I want to delve into the world of Fuzz and Distortion as I currently don’t have much use for that sound, but there are a lot of cool pedals out there I hope to check out.  Again, I don’t plan to go crazy here, I just want to get a couple of pedals that I can actually use on a regular basis.

How about you?  Any good Bass Effects Pedals you recommend?  I’d love to hear from you.

  1. I’m definitely itching to get a Big Muff pedal. I love the grungy, fuzzy tone and can see using it in my band.

  2. I’ve been eyeing one of those for a while. In my current band I wouldn’t have a use for it though, so it is on the back burner for now. From what I’ve heard they sound phenomenal!

  3. MXR pedals are fantastic! Check out the their envelope filter for a little Bootsy action. Have the Big Muff pi, MXR envelop, octaver, and microflanger, and a Boss chorus. But like you, they are very situational. I use the fuzz on a couple of songs, the flang on a couple of songs, the envelop on a couple of songs. I use the chorus a lot though. Anyway,
