You know I have GASSED over MarkBass Amps many a time, but have never actually sat down and played one. I hear great things about them, perhaps I'll make it a goal of mine to at least play through one this year. Thanks for the input!

I bought a MarkBass all in one last year. One 12' speaker, 350 watts. Sounds massive, and easy to expand.
Instead of GK(ugh) or Fender(same), check out MarkBass. They're very light in weight, and heavy in sound. Lots of warm, neutral tone in the amp to allow the sound of your fingers to come through.

One of the ways you can measure your progress and see where your abilities stand
is to play with a rehearsal band. If your in a city that has a substantial Musician's union
you should be able to find a rehearsal band through them.
If you play well, you'll be able to evaluate where you stand. If you play badly, you will
know where you need to focus your practice. That is where you want to challenge
your skills, playing live music with which you have no familiarity.

Nice topic!
I bought the BG 29 a few years ago, used, for 300 euro's (incl. Fender hard case).
Didn't play it often, because I didn't like the sound, compared to my upright and my jazzbass (might be a matter of poor playing-technique on this one ;-). I tried to put d'Addario flatwound strings on it, and that's where this topic becomes interesting. The fact is: I found out that other strings don't fit in the 'bridge-tunnels' of the BG 29!! And since the g-string broke due to messing around with it on the headstock during removing and replacing, I put the guitar away, Thought about selling it and maybe trying a Cort acoustic bass sometimes, with more possibilities in string-variety.
Now I understand that you were able to try different types/brands of strings on your BG 29... did you make the holes/tunnels in the bridge wider? Or did you use strings with end-balls that fit in the holes? I'm curious about that, because I'd like to find a way to put other strings on mine (at least a new g-string..).

Hello Stefan, thanks for the links. I have the Essential Music Theory book & have just started working through it. I'm realizing that I know more than I thought, which is a good thing, but feel like I have yet to reach that "Ah-Ha" moment where it all makes sense.

Hi Stanton,
I've reached lesson 5 of TMBG, and being a total beginner I'm very happy to finally be able to play a few bass lines.
But I also need to catch up with the theory. I have just bought the 'Essential Music Theory for Electric Bass' book by Robert Garner and it seem to be a great book.
http://www.bassbooks.com/shopping/shopexd.asp?id=922&bc=no

And here are two links which I found today which seem to be very good, for a begiiner like me at least:

Cheers!

Andres, hard to say, if I had to sell mine I'd hope to get something in the $300-$400 range, but I love mine and it would be hard to part with so I may be biased here.

Hey, Stanton -

I'm not surprised to hear you've had a challenging time with Lesson 12 - it's definitely the "deep end" of the pool - but I'm sorry to hear you find a disconnect between the video lesson and the book. It was our intention, especially as the going begins to get a bit heavier at this point, to make the book more supplementary to the lesson than reflective of it, and I'm disappointed to hear of your frustration. Of course, our intention is to avoid such hiccups and, where they exist, to rectify them. So, if you find time in your busy schedule, I'd be grateful if you'd chronicle your observations on the specific points at which the book and the video diverge and to offer whatever suggestions for improvements you think would make the lesson better.

As always, your time and thoughtful observations are deeply appreciate as we strive to improve TMBG! Please send them directly to me at david@thelearningdock.com.

Thanks,
David
