Weekly Ramble 1/27/12

Been spending some serious time studying music theory this past week, working with Robert Garner’s “Essential Music Theory for Electric Bass” trying to internalize and truly understand as much as I can.  I am discovering that I know a lot of bits and pieces and am now starting to understand how they all fit together.  I’ve also been revisiting Lesson 4 of Teach Me Bass Guitar as Roy covers several key theory concepts in this lesson.  Feels like I’ve spent more time studying than playing this week, but I feel it must be done and I know it will have it’s rewards.  I have been running through the A scales this week and working on a couple of exercises in the Bass Aerobics book, so at least I’m getting some playing time in.

For 2012 I’ve decided I need to devote more time to being creative and writing music. I have been working more and more with GarageBand on the iPad, writing bass lines to drum loops and tracks that I come up with.  I picked up an Apogee Jam interface which seems to provide a cleaner, stronger signal than the iRig adapter I have been using.  The iPad is a great unit to work with as I can pretty much record anywhere.  I find myself spending hours tweaking and mixing songs, adding additional software instruments along the way.  The funny part is that I think I have been spending so much time studying the music aspect, that I forgot about the creative process.  Recording tracks and putting songs together has actually renewed my faith in my playing ability as it provides me with honest feedback of my playing as well as my tone.  Guess I need to learn to balance my musical aspirations a little better.
